Sierra Kaspar, an early 2026 Brewer High School graduate, recently won a gold medal in the Women’s Football Competition at the 2025 Deaflympics in Japan. A goalie for the US Women’s Deaf National Soccer Team, Kaspar was 1 of 23 players from across the country invited to play with the team. Superintendent Frank Molinar and the Board of Trustees recognized Kaspar during the December board meeting.

When she was first diagnosed with hearing loss, Kaspar never imagined it would one day lead her to travel across the country doing what she loves. A soccer player since age 4, she began experiencing hearing issues in fifth grade and was diagnosed with progressive hearing loss the following year. She’s worn hearing aids for the past five years.

In January 2025, Kaspar thought she’d lost additional hearing, so her hearing was reassessed. What began as a 20-/30-decibel loss of hearing became a 60-decibel loss in the right ear and 56 in her left. In June of this year, her hearing was at 70 in the right and 65 in the left ear. She is now considered severely deaf in both ears.

The mother of a player with her club soccer team encouraged her to try out for the US Women’s Deaf National Soccer Team in May. To qualify, participants must have an average 55-decibel loss in their better ear. Kaspar reached out to the head coach and was invited to join the team for summer camp in New Mexico; she tried out in September. A gold medal later, she aspires to try out for next year’s team.

She played soccer for the BHS Lady Bears for three years and is a goalie for the Dallas Surf U19 GA Club Team.

Kaspar's received numerous college offers and plans to continue playing at the next level in the fall. Until then, she’s embracing life, learning sign language, and doing what she loves.
