2018 Inductees
1956 Girls' Basketball Team
The 1956 Girls’ Basketball Team was the first District Champion Team in Brewer High School history and the only district team to advance to the regional playoffs in 1956. Linda Allred, “Dot” Griggs, Alberta Foley and Jimmie Sessions earned All District honors. Four-year lettermen were Sue Turner, Dorothy Griggs, Jimmie Sessons and Linda Allred.
Head Coach was Ellen Johnson. Players were: Sharon Clark Blair, Barbara Burchfield Bryant, Alberta Foley, Hershelene Fowler, Genette Vanderford Lee, Donnie Long Loomer, Norma Miles, Bettye Hudson Landau, Dorothy Griggs Morris, Glenda Lancaster Rawlins, Gail Young Stanford, Myrna Stanford Thompson, Sue Turner, Jimmie Sessions Vanderford and Linda Allred Young. Team Managers were: Pat Oler Day, Sharon Beckham Scott, Gail Stumbo and Sally Werner.
1989 Girls Meter Relay Team
The 1989 Girls’ 800 Relay Team The girls won the 1989 District Championship with a time of 1 minute 44 seconds. They qualified at Regionals, and the team was the 1989 Regional Runner Up. Members were: Stephanie Slovak Eudaly, Tarona “T-Rae” Smith, Cassandra James Sutton and Teresa Woods, and coach was Linda Sarrett Mathis.
Michael “Mickey” Lee - Class of 1958
A member of the varsity baseball, basketball and track teams ALL four years, Mickey Lee also played for the varsity football team his freshmen year. Selected to the 1st Team All District Baseball Team in 1955, ‘56, ‘57 and ‘58, Mickey was a Student Body President, Student Council President and Class President. He graduated fifth in his class. Captain of the basketball team, Mickey was named to the 1956 All Tournament Basketball Team and 1958 All District Basketball Team.
He played baseball for Tarleton State University on a scholarship from 1958 to 1960. He was selected to the 1960 Baseball 1st Team NJCAA All American Team. Mickey was the 1960 Most Valuable Player in the NJCAA World Series.
He received a baseball scholarship to play at Baylor University from 1960 to ‘61 and then played for the semi pros until age 25. Mickey was inducted into the 1980 Tarleton State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Kerry Knox - Class of 1985
A 1983, ‘84 and ‘85 All District Pitcher, Kerry Knox was voted All District MVP in 1984 and ‘85. Named All Tarrant County Pitcher in 1984 and ‘85, Kerry broke the ‘85 state single season strike out record with 225 strikeouts in 110 innings. He had 545 career strike outs in 305 innings and three no-hitters. A member of the varsity football team for two years, Kerry played for the 1985 team which went the furthest in Brewer history.
He played in the 1985 Texas All Star Game and earned a TCU baseball scholarship. A 1988 Sunner League All American Pitcher, Kerry was the 1989 Pitcher of the Year. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1989, Kerry pitched professionally for 11 years for San Diego, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Texas. He also played for Italy, Taiwan, Mexico and Venezuela and was the Italian Major League ERA leader in 1998.
Matt Chapman - Class of 1995
Named Brewer High School’s Most Athletic in 1995, Matt Chapman was a four-year letterman in baseball, a three-year letterman in football and he played for the Bears’ varsity basketball team for one.
The 1992 District Football Sophomore of the Year, Matt was the ’93 and ’94 All District Linebacker and ’94 2nd Team All District Running Back. A member of the 1994 Bi-District Champion Baseball Team, Matt was selected as the ’93 District Baseball Sophomore of the Year and ’94 District Baseball MVP.
The 1995 All District Pitcher and All Area Utility Baseball Player, Matt was also selected to the Star Telegram Baseball All Star Team that year. He received a football scholarship to Sam Houston State University, and Matt is now the head football coach at Peaster ISD.
Kelly Shoppach - Class of 1998
Named Brewer’s Most Athletic in 1998, Kelly Shoppach was the 1997 District Football MVP with 1,100 yards rushing, 400 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns, five in the SAME game. Selected 1996 1st Team All District Running Back, Kelly earned All District Football honors in ’95, ’96 and ’97.
Kelly was selected to the ‘97 and ’98 Louisville Slugger TPX All-American Team, and he was the ‘97 and ‘98 All-State Catcher, Dallas All-Area Catcher and District MVP. The 1997 All Tarrant County Catcher, Kelly was the 1998 Tarrant County Player of the Year and Tarrant County Catcher. He was recognized as the ‘96 Newcomer of the Year and 1st Team All District Catcher.
Kelly received a scholarship to play baseball at Baylor University, where he was the 2001 Big 12 Player of the Year and 1st Team All American. He received the 2001 Johnny Bench Award as the nation’s top collegiate catcher, and he was named 2001 1st Team All American by Baseball America, Baseball Weekly, the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball and NBWA.
His Major League debut was in 2005 with the Boston Red Sox. He also played for the Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners until 2013. In 2008, he became the second ALB player in history and 8th MLB player overall to record 5 extra base hits in one game. He had three doubles and two home runs, including a game-tying home run in the ninth inning.
2015 Inductees
Terry Mooney - Class of 1985
Voted Most Athletic in 1985, Terry Mooney played varsity football and baseball for three years and varsity basketball for four. The 1982 All District Sophomore of the Year and All Tarrant County Sophomore of the Year in football, Mooney was the 1983 and 1984 All District Quarterback. The 1983 All District 3rd Baseman, Mooney was the 1984 and 1985 All District Shortstop and 1985 Baseball MVP.
He earned All District basketball in 1984 and 1985 and was the 1984 and 1985 Football and Basketball MVP. Mooney received a baseball scholarship to TCU, where he was a four-year letterman and won the 1989 Frank Windegger TCU Fightin’ Frog Award.
Greg Morris - Class of 1987
The 1987 Best All-Around Athlete, Greg Morris was a three-year letterman in baseball and two-year letterman in football.
Named All District Baseball in 1986 and 1987, Morris was a member of the 1987 State Baseball Playoff Team, the first and only team to advance to state. He also earned the 1986 All State Defensive End title and was a member of the 1987 Whataburger All-Star Team.
The 1985 and 1986 All District Punter, Morris was the 1986 All District Defensive End and 1986 All County in football.
He played football with the Tarleton State Texans, and he was a stunt quarterback in the film “Necessary Roughness.”
Aubrey Huff - Class of 1995
A member of the 1994 Area Championship and Regional Semi-Finals baseball team, Aubrey Huff was 1st Team All District in baseball in 1994 and 1995 and the 1994 and 1995 Basketball MVP.
Huff was Vernon College's 1996 Baseball MVP after batting .410 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs.
He played the next two seasons with the University of Miami Hurricanes; and in 1997, he led the team with 21 home runs and a school record of 95 runs batted in. Named 1997 1st Team All-American by Baseball America, The Sporting News and National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association, Huff was inducted into the 2009 University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
Huff was a fifth round MLB draft pick for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998, and he made his major league debut in 2000, playing for the Baltimore Orioles. The 2008 Orioles MVP, Huff received the 2008 Silver Slugger Award and the 2008 Edgar Martinez Award for Best Designated Hitter in the American League.
During his MLB career, Huff also played for the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants, with whom he won World Series Rings in 2010 and 2012. Huff played 1,681 pro games, with a .278 career average, 242 home runs and 904 RBIs.
2014 Inductees
Coach Ellen Johnson: 1952-1965
Coach Ellen Johnson won seven district girls basketball championships during her 13-year tenure at Brewer, coaching three girls basketball teams that advanced to the regional finals. The 1958 team won the championship, advancing to the state tournament.
Johnson coached volleyball, girls and boys tennis, and golf. She played for the Fort Worth Rebels Women’s Softball Team, which played in China and Mexico. The team won the Mexico Championship, in which she was a player and coach.
The 1958 and 1963 girls basketball teams and several of her players were previously inducted into the Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
2000 Softball Team
With a postseason record of 26-11, the 2000 softball team was the first softball team in Brewer High School history to advance to District play. The girls won the Bi-District and Area Championships as well as the Regional Semi-Finals. The team advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals, losing to Weatherford, the eventual 4A state champion.
Coach Bill Watkins was named Fort Worth Star-Telegram Coach of the Year and pitcher Diana Castañeda, Newcomer of the Year. Centerfielder Kelly Lowry was named to the Area 2nd Team.
Players were: Asia Anders, Diana Castañeda, Jessica Sanchez Castillo, Samantha Hannah Fowler, Nicole Jones Herrick, Annie Bewley Lease, Ashley Nelson, Kelly Lowry Ramsey, Tamber Podsednik Simmons, Kylee Armstrong Velarde and Mandy Blevins Yount. Assistant Coaches were Theresa Bicknell Barnett and Jennifer Walker Heddins.
Eric Morris - Class of 1983
The 1981 District Sophomore of the Year, Eric Morris was a three-year letterman in baseball. Pitching 48 innings with 32 strike outs that year, he had a 2.63 Earned Run Average and batted a .304 average.
The 1982 All Tarrant County Pitcher, Morris was also District MVP, with a pitching record of 13-2. He pitched two shutouts against the eventual district champions. Brewer was 10-0 in district, and Morris made the All Tarrant County Team, with a batting average of .481 and Earned Run Average of 1.22.
Voted 1983 District MVP as second baseman, Morris hit seven home runs and had a .400 batting average in district. His batting average for the season was .342, with 32 RBIs and 7 home runs, and an Earned Run Average of 1.0.
A two-year football letterman, Morris was the 1981 All-District Punter with a 37.3 average. He was named the 1982 All-District Quarterback, with 85 completions of 147 attempts for 1,214 yards in 8 regular season games.
He was the only quarterback signed by the number 1 ranked SMU Mustangs in 1983. The 1983 class of recruits was ranked number 2 in the nation. Morris played in the 1983 Sun Bowl and Oil Bowl All-Star Games as well as the 1984 Aloha Bowl.
Diana Castañeda - Class of 2002
The 2002 Star-Telegram Area Softball Statistic (Pitching) Leader and All District 6-4A Pitcher of the Year, Diana Castañeda was a four-year softball letterman. A member of the 2002 All Star-Telegram 1st Team Softball Team, Castañeda earned All District All Academic in softball in 2002.
Also that year, she was named an Honorable Mention Star-Telegram Player of the Week and selected for the 2002 Softball West All Star Team. The 2000 Fort Worth Star-Telegram Newcomer of the Year, Castañeda was also named Honorable Mention for softball by the Dallas Morning News. A four-year cross country letterman, she was a 1999 All District Team Regional Qualifier. She earned All District Academic in basketball and softball that year, lettering in basketball for three years.
The first woman to be named DECA State President in 20 years, Castañeda earned a full scholarship to attend the University of Texas San Antonio, where she pitched for a year and then transferred to North Texas State University to earn her degree.
2013 Inductees
George Clark - Class of 1963
The 1963 Honorable Mention All-State Quarterback, George Clark was a three-year letterman in baseball, basketball, football and golf and a four-year letterman in tennis. Brewer High School’s 1963 Most Athletic, Clark was All-District Quarterback and All-District in baseball in 1963.
He earned Honorable Mention All-District in basketball in 1963 and was a regional qualifier in tennis and golf the same year. He received scholarship offers in football and baseball.
Jimmy Barger - Class of 1966
A three-year letterman in baseball, basketball, football and track, Jimmy Barger earned All-State Honorable Mention in football in 1966. He was named 1966 All-District 1st Team in basketball and All-District in football and baseball. Barger also received All-District in football, basketball and baseball in 1965 and earned Honorable Mention All-District in baseball as a sophomore.
He received baseball scholarships to attend Blinn Junior College and the University of Houston, and he played in the National Junior College World Series with Blinn. He was also invited to try out for the New York Mets.
Gary Cox - Class of 1969
The 1969 Honorable Mention All-State Linebacker and All-District Quarterback, Gary Cox was selected 1968 BHS Most Athletic. The 1969 Outstanding Offensive Back and Football Captain, Cox was All-District Point Guard and All-District Pitcher in 1969.
Named All-District Honorable Mention Linebacker in 1967 and 1968, Cox was also All-District 1st baseman during those years. He earned All-District Honorable Mention Quarterback and All-District Honorable Mention Point Guard in 1968.
A three-year letterman in baseball and football and a two-year letterman in basketball, Cox received a four-year athletic scholarship to TCU.
1965-66 Boys Basketball Team
The first and only team in Brewer history to win the District Championship and advance to the Playoffs, the 1965-66 boys’ basketball team had a 25-4 season record.
Head Coach was Don Matthews and Assistant Coach was Harvey Smith. Players were: Tony McPherson, Steve Walker, the late Daniel Starr, Jimmy Barger, the late Pat Killough and Mark Box. Managers were: Larry Bradley, Ronnie Echols, David Hatley, Ken Slovak and the late Teddy Brown.
Lindley, Barger and Cody were named to All-Tournament teams.
2012 Inductees
Bennie Howe - Class of 1957
Named All-District football in 1954, ’55 and ’56, Bennie Howe won the 100-yard dash and broad jump in District in 1954. He also won the 100-yard dash at the 1955 and 1956 District Track Meets. Football Captain in1955 and 1956, Howe also played outfielder for the 1956 District Baseball Champions.
He lettered in baseball, football, basketball and track for three years and received a football scholarship to the University of Houston, where he played tight end. He retired as a coach in the Houston area junior highs and high schools.
Jeff Cody - Class of 1959
A three-year basketball letterman, Jeff Cody was the 1959 Coaches 5-AAA All-District Outstanding Player, averaging better than 19 points and 26 rebounds per game.
Named Honorable Mention on the Texas Sportswriters Association all-state team, Cody also received the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Dallas Morning News All-District Awards. He was selected All-Tournament in the Weatherford College and Handley Tournaments. Voted Best All-Round, Cody also lettered in baseball and football. He received a four-year scholarship to Midwestern State University.
Inducted into the Texas Association Basketball Hall of Fame, Cody was a high school head basketball coach for 43 years. A nine-time District Coach of the Year, Cody was the 1996 Oil Bowl All Star Coach and TABC All Star Coach. He is also a four-time Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coach of the Year and the 1997 Star-Telegram Metroplex Coach of the Year.
His career highlights include: a state runner-up team; a state semi-finalist; three regional finals; two regional semi-finals; two regional quarterfinals; four area finals; and numerous district and bi-district playoff wins.
Matt Davis - Class of 1992
A 1992 Top 100 Football Prospect in Texas, Matt Davis earned 1st Team All-State honors as a receiver and 2nd Team All-State honors as defensive back. The 1992 All-Tarrant County Football Receiver, Davis was named All-District Football and MVP for District 8-4A.
A member of Texas Basketball Magazine’s 1992 All State 2nd Team and the 1992 McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Team, Davis was also selected for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-Region 1st Team in 1992 and the 2nd Team in 1991. He was also named All District in basketball in 1992. His junior year, Davis was named All-District 8-4A MVP in basketball; All-Tarrant County Football Defensive Back; and District 8-4A All-District Football Receiver.
A member of the All-Academic football and basketball teams his junior and senior years, Davis was selected as the 1990 District 8-4A Sophomore of the Year in basketball. Also a track letterman, Davis participated in the National Honor Society, Student Council and was named Who’s Who.
He played for the University of Texas Longhorns team that won the last SWC Championship and the first Big 12 Championship; he played in three bowl games.
1963 Girls Basketball Team
The 1963 Girls Basketball Team won back-to-back District Championships in 1962 and 1963. They defeated Duncanville ISD for the Bi-District Championship and won their first game in the Regional Tournament at North Texas State University.
During the Regional Finals, the team was defeated by West ISD by only 6 points; the West ISD team won the 1963 State Championship. The ’63 Brewerettes won trophies in every tournament they played during their junior and senior years, and the entire starting lineup received All-District honors. Three girls were selected as 1st Team All-District, and three were selected to 2nd Team All-District. Three team members were offered scholarships to play basketball at Wayland College.
Players were: Lynda Sawyer Beams; Mary Kemp Clark; Phyllis Rauls Costephens; Linda Rhodes Draper; Drinda Dearing Fiske; Gwenda Jones Gaston; Jenny Griggs; Frances Rhodes Holland; Myra Walker Jaynes; Shirley Sandlin Matthews; Dolly Cowsar Padenrea, Bobbie Moore Swann; Linda Sessions Tatum; and Juretta Kirkland Wells.
Team managers were: Pam Gustafson Askins, Betty Adkins and Nancy Goggans Winn. Coach was Ellen Johnson. Under her leadership, the Brewer girls’ basketball program advanced to seven District Championships and two Regional Finals.
1989 Football Team
The 1989-90 football team has advanced farther in the playoffs than any other football team in Brewer history. With a 11-2 season record, the ’89 team won the District Championship. The team beat Northwest Texas 42-0 to take the Bi-District Championship, and they defeated Stephenville to win the Regional Championship, and the ’89 team advanced to the Area Championship game against Big Spring.
Team members were: the late Joey Adkins, Robbie Alsbrooks, Richard Bautista, Lloyd Bircher, Brian Bowman, Jody Brannon, Rick Brown, Brandon Chenault, Carl Cole, Kevin Crisp, Matt Davis, Trevor Edwards, Jarvis Edwards, Ben Fay, Gene Floyd, Scott Franklin, JV Giron, Lucho Giron, Jeremy Greer, the late Tony Harmon, Mike Ikerd, Perrick Johnson, Skip Lindley, James Lohman, the late Mitch Martin, Joe Matlock, John McMillin, Jason Moore, James Nored, Rick O’Henley, Boyd Oomging, Chris Petro, Pat Pitman, Troy Proctor, Randy Summerhill, Spencer Taylor, Kenny Tuck, Scott Wright and Marc Young.
Ben Fay, Tony Harmon and Rick Brown were named to the All-Tarrant County 1st Team, and Coach Ben Davis was selected All-Tarrant County Coach of the Year. Trevor Edwards was named to the All-Tarrant County 2nd Team, and Fay was also named All-Tarrant County Sophomore of the Year. Several players earned 6-4A all-district honors. Rick Brown was Most Valuable Player, Tony Harmon, Defensive Player of the Year; and Ben Fay, Sophomore of the Year.
Team members John McMillin, Brandon Chenault, Rick O’Henley, Trevor Edwards; Chris Petro, Skipper Lindley and Gene Floyd were selected for the All-District 1st Team. Spencer Taylor, James Nored, Brian Bowman and Scott Franklin were named to the 2nd team, and Ben Davis was selected as Coach of the Year. Several players had the opportunity to play at the college level.
Head Coach was Ben Davis, and coaches were: Bob Auten, Ted Fay, Al Gonzales, John Herrick, and the late James Roller. Trainer was Randy Reaves.
2011 Inductees
Linda Goodger Tucknies - Class of 1959
Linda Goodger Tucknies is pictured with Superintendent Audrey Arnold and her teammate and childhood friend, Carolyn Morris.
The first female at Brewer High School to be selected as an All-State Player, Linda Goodger Tucknies was a 1958 3A-5 State Runner Up, and she was selected for the 1958 2A Girls’ State High School All-Tournament Basketball Team.
A member of the Brewerettes girls’ varsity basketball team for three years, Goodger was a member of the only girls’ basketball team to ever advance to the State Tournament.
Goodger also played varsity tennis all four years, and she was a member of the cheerleading squad throughout high school. Tennis captain in 1958, she was also treasurer of the student body her senior year and a member of the Art Club for two years.
Rick “Downtown” Brown, Class of 1990
Brewer High School’s 1989-90 All-Around Male Athlete, Rick Brown was team captain of the football and basketball teams, and he also lettered in track. He was selected 1987-88 Basketball Newcomer of the Year and Brewer High School 3D Award Winner. The 1989-90 6-4A 1stTeam Guard, Brown also earned State Honorable Mention for basketball that year.
A member of the 1990 Boys’ Basketball Team, which has the most wins and most playoff wins in the history of Brewer boys’ basketball, Brown scored the winning basket in the Bi-District Championship game against Burkburnett.
He was a member of the 1989-1990 District and Bi-District Champion Football Team, which advanced further than any other football team in Brewer history. Brown was named the 1989-1990 District 6-4A MVP and 1st Team Tarrant County Defensive Back.
Brown earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Alabama, where his team won the 1992 NCAA National Championship.
Ben Fay - Class of 1992
The 1992 Valedictorian, Ben Fay was an all-around athlete who lettered in baseball, basketball, track and football.
A four-year letterman in baseball, Fay was named All-District Catcher all four years. The 1988 District Newcomer of the Year, Fay was selected 1990 and 1991 All-County. The 1991 District MVP and ’91 All-Area Player, Fay hit .486 and had four home runs, nine doubles, 20 RBIs, and 26 runs scored. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1992.
A member of the 1989-1990 Bi-District Champion Brewer Basketball Team, Fay played basketball for two years, and he earned the designation of 1990-91 District Defensive Player of the Year.
Quarterback of the Brewer Football Team for three years, Fay had a record of 28-5-2. He was the 1989 All-Tarrant County 1st Team Quarterback, All-Tarrant County Sophomore of the Year and 2nd Team All-Tarrant County. Named All-District Quarterback in 1989, 1990 and 1991, Fay was selected as the 1991 All-District Punter and 1990 District MVP.
In 1989, he finished second in the state in passing yardage, and in 1989, he completed 96 of 181 passes for 1,775 yards, had 16 touchdowns passing, threw eight interceptions, and 320 rushing.
He earned a football scholarship to Texas Tech University and he was later appointed into the US Naval Academy, where he played football from 1994 to 1996. Team Captain and Quarterback in 1995 and 1996, Fay was the prestigious Thompson Cup Trophy Winner and the Rip Miller Leadership Award. The team won the 1996 Aloha Bowl Championship, and he was selected as the 1995 Chevy Player of the Game vs. Notre Dame.
He threw for over 1500 yards, threw seven passes for touchdowns, and ran for eight touchdowns. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the Navy and flew communications planes for nuclear subs. He is currently a reserve officer for the Navy and is employed by Southwest Airlines as a pilot.
1967-68 Football Team
The only team to win a District Championship in football during the first 30 years of Brewer history, the 1967 football team was undefeated in district play in a district with nine teams. The Bears and Como High played the first integrated football game in Fort Worth on Sept. 23, 1967, with Brewer winning 20-13.
Head Coach is Don Walker and assistants are Jerry Kirby, Don Matthews and Charles White. 1994 Baseball Team
The District 6-4A Champs, the 1994 baseball team swept Boswell in a best of 3 game series to win the Bi-District Championship. They proceeded to sweep Eastern Hills in a best of 3 game series for the Area Championship. The boys beat Sweetwater in a 1 game series to win the Region Semifinals, but they lost to Big Springs in a best of 3 game series during the Regional Finals.
Head coach is John Herrick and assistant is Terry Massey. Members of the 1994 baseball team are: Jay Arnold, Matt Chapman, JC Conyers, Adam Erber, Craig Fowles, James Garcia, Chad Hamzy, Aubrey Huff, Jason Keathley, Gregg Keeton, J.R. Lopez, Kim Mask, Ricky Shelhorse, Jason Stockton, Paul Tecci and Jeremy Wander.
Aubrey Huff became a professional baseball player, winning the 2011 World Series with the San Francisco Giants.

Coach Ben Davis
Brewer High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach from 1975 to 1995 and Athletic Director from 1995 to 2000, Ben Davis had 141 wins during his tenure and 69 losses. The Bears won eight District Championships, eight Bi-District Championships, two Regional Championships and one Area Championship.
A seven-time District Coach of the Year, Davis was the 1989 Tarrant County Coach of the Year, and he received the Texas High School Coaches’ Association’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Coaching Profession.
A recipient of the White Settlement Sunrise Kiwanis’ M.H. “Red” Barry Community Achievement Award and the Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Service Award, Davis is a member of the University of Tulsa Football Hall of Fame.
A member of the EECU Board of Directors for the past 40 years, he is also president of the WSISD Board of Trustees.
Coach Kenny Williams
Coach Kenny Williams led the Brewer Bear Boys’ basketball team to the playoffs in 1990, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. District Coach of the Year for the 1989-90 and 1996-97 seasons, Williams was also nominated as the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Coach of the Year, an award given to only four other statewide coaches in divisions 1A through 5A.
A successful Brewer athlete himself, Williams began his coaching career at the middle school in 1982. He became varsity assistant for the Lady Bears’ team in 1983 and coached the freshmen and JV Lady Bears teams. He also coached the 1984 varsity girls’ track team. He is currently a counselor at Brewer High School
1958 Girls Basketball Team
The 1958 girls basketball team is the only girls basketball team to ever advance to the State Tournament. The “Brewerettes” won the District Championship and ended conference play with a 6-0 record. They played 23 games and lost only three, two of which were to 4A teams. The team took second place at state.
Coach Ellen Johnson and members of the 1958 girls’ basketball team were: Barbara Burchfield Bryant, Betty Burnett Versteegh, Sharon Clark Blair, Jo Ann Daniel Perry, Verna Dolloff Ohlhausen, Glenda Goodger Hanson, Linda Goodger Tucknies, Margaret Goodwin Spencer, Carolyn Hanson Morris, Bettye Hudson Landau, Myrna Stanford Thompson, Margie Thomas, the late Laverne Chapman, Jo Sue Gossett Dulaney, Donna King McKee and Billie Kyle Reaves. Managers were Sharon Beckham Scott and Wanda Robbins Rodger.
1984 Football Team
With an overall record of 10-3, the 1984 Brewer football team went three rounds in the playoffs, the furthest any team in Brewer history has achieved. The 1984 team won the Zone Championship, the District Championship and qualified for Regionals.
Players were: Joseph Abanilla, Kelly Abbott, Andy Bray, the late Julius Collins, Chad Davis, Rich Dear, Donald Feronti, Todd Hatcher, Paul Lewis, Daryl McCollough, Frank Molinar, Phil Norris, Gary Robinson, Page Sadler, Johnny Summerhill,Randy Wiley, David Adkins, Shawn Burkhart, Randall Deaver. Russell Henderson, the late Eric Johnson, Kerry Knox, Roy Kruze, Terry Mooney, Wesley Moore, Dwayne Moyers, Mike Serenil, Chance Welch, David Westbrook and Matthew Winters .
Head Coach was Ben Davis and assistants were: Bob Auten, Al Gonzales, Dale Hart, the late James Roller, Kenny Williams, John Herrick, Mike Jenkins, Gail Kohn, the late Travis Salinas, John Slikker, Jim Stewart and Mike Turner.
1987 Baseball Team
The first and only Brewer baseball team to advance to the State Playoffs, the 1987 team won second at State. The North Zone Champions and Bi-District and Regional Champions, Brewer took second place among 146 Class 4A teams that year. The team advanced further than any team in the history of Brewer High School, ending the season with a 25-12 record.
Players were: Bret Bentley, Rich Dear, Todd Hatcher, Derek Keathley, Fernando Molinar, Greg Morris, Toy Polk, Bobby Sisai, Craig Slovak, Ken Stavenhagen, Joe Whiteside, Brian Bowman, Donnie Carlisle, Lance De Los Santos, Devin Dixon, Scott Hall, Shawn Hammack, Scott Lichner, Peanuts Lowry, Shawn McBride, Wesley Moore, Chris O’Henley, Joey Paden, Ronnie Powers, Steve Putnam, John Turner, and Thomas Winters.
Head Coach was Mike Turner and assistants were Terry Massey, Mark Gabbert, Ted Fay and John Herrick. The late Maggie Jenkins served as the team’s scorekeeper, team mom and statistician.
1990 Boys Basketball Team
The 1990 boys basketball team had the most wins (27) and most playoff wins in the history of Brewer boys’ basketball. The team won the Bi-District Championship with a 25-7 record, the Area Championship with a 26-7 record, and the Regional Semi-Finals with a 27-7 record. Prior to that season, only one team had advanced to the Playoffs. The team finished as the Region 1 finalist, a game shy of state.
Head Coach was Kenny Williams, and assistants were: Baron Pressley and Pete Valamides. Players were: Rick Brown, Matt Davis, Randall Duff, Trevor Edwards, TJ McMillan, Kevin Reid, Russ Welch, Robert Williams, Ben Fay, Scott Garrett, Matt Gibbins and James Pierce. Scorekeeper was Linda Sarrett; statistician, Raquel Bustamante Martin; and video technician, Billy Ferguson.
Dorothy Griggs Morris - Class of 1956
Named the 1954 Who’s Who in Girls’ Physical Education and 1956 Most Athletic, Dorothy Griggs Morris played basketball and tennis during all four years of high school. She led her basketball team to the first district and regional finals in BHS basketball history, and she was the high scorer with 33 points during the Bi-District Championship. Named All-District basketball in 1955, Griggs was also a member of the cheerleading squad.
She was an activist for special needs children before special programs was implemented in White Settlement ISD, and she also served on the WSISD Board of Trustees from 1978 to 1982. The multi-purpose center at Brewer Middle School (formerly Brewer High School) is named for her.
William Roach - Class of 1956
Brewer’s first four-year starter in football and basketball, William Roach was voted Most Athletic in 1956. Captain of the football and basketball teams in 1956, Roach was named All-District in football in 1953, 1954 and 1955.
Also a member of the track and tennis teams, Roach earned a football scholarship to Texas Christian University, where he made the SWC freshmen football team (freshmen were not eligible to play varsity). He played in the 1958 Cotton Bowl and the 1959 Bluebonnet Bowl and later signed with the Houston Oilers.
Clint Jaynes - Class of 1984
Named Outstanding Athlete his junior and senior years, Clint Jaynes was voted Most Athletic in 1984, and he was a member of the Brewer High School football, basketball, baseball and track teams. He was selected to the1984 Oil Bowl All-Star Team. Among the Texas Top 100 Football Recruits in 1984, Jaynes was First Team All-District Tight-End and All-Tarrant County First Team.
In addition to winning the District Championship for Discus in ’82, ’83 and ’84 and being a Discus Regional Finalist in 1983 and 1984, Jaynes was named the 1984 District 4A5 MVP in basketball and All-District 4A5 in ’82, ’83 and ’84.
He earned a full athletic scholarship to play football at Baylor University, where he was a Baylor Bear from 1984 to 1988 and a member of the Baylor Bear Letterman’s Association.
Margie Tyrone - Class of 1990
Margie Tyrone advanced to the State Track Meet three consecutive years as a shot-put contender, winning the State Championship in 1990. State runner-Up in 1989 and fourth place State Finalist in 1988.
Brewer’s Most Athletic in 1990 and named All-District Basketball in 1989 and 1990, Tyrone was a member of the girls’ varsity basketball team for three years and the varsity track team for four. A 1990 Discus Regional Qualifier, Tyrone won the 1989 and 1990 District Championship, and she was District Runner-Up in 1988.
She earned a full scholarship to attend Angelo State University from 1990 to 1994. She won fourth place in the National All-American Shot-Put in 1992 and took eighth place in 1993. A 1994 Shot-Put National Qualifier, Tyrone was the Lone Star Conference Shot-Put Champion in 1992 and 1993.
